A band’s
visual debut.
This project marked the debut of The Villainess, a band introducing themselves to a local audience through a single, punchy musical experience.
The Villainess, a Grand Rapids-based band, needed to establish themselves quickly ahead of a Halloween launch. With just one month to work, the band wanted to create a cover music video that told a story—something memorable that could introduce their sound, style, and personality in a single release.
Goal
With a tight deadline, planning had to begin immediately. Logistics added another layer of complexity: the band’s lead singer, Hailie, was rehearsing for a local community theater production and only had a two-hour window available for filming.
To make the most of that limited time, I developed an achievable story concept supported by a storyboard and detailed shot list, organized by location and time. This pre-production work allowed us to move efficiently and capture everything we needed within the constraints of the schedule.
Once filming was complete, I edited the footage to the song audio provided by the band. The final cut establishes characters, motivation, and a sense of mystery designed to hold attention and invite curiosity.
Strategy
The finished music video premiered on time at the band’s launch party at a favorite local bar, then was published to YouTube as their first major public-facing asset. It now serves as a foundation for ongoing visibility and something the band can continue to share as they continue to tell their story.
